Timothy Leary
Timothy Leary was an American psychologist, academic, and writer who advocated strongly for the benefits of LSD and other psychedelics. During LSD's short lived legality in the US Leary worked on Harvard's Psilocybin Project doing experiments such as the Concord Prison Experiment to determine the benefits of psychedelic drugs in conforming convicts. A cultural icon as well, Leary coined phrases like, "Turn on, tune in, drop out," a motto synonymous with the sixties, while he gave talks across the country and shared ideas with other influential social and academic leaders. He has authored and co-authored a number of works which delve into ideas such as, Reality Tunnel, a theory of representational realism wherein Leary explains that what each individual sees and interprets to be true and real is shaped by their own given life experiences and beliefs. Leary was a fascinating and influential man who helped shape a huge cultural movement in North America. |
