While back home people were swarming malls to get the best post-Christmas deals and buy all those things they didn’t receive for Christmas but really wanted, I headed to Gili Meno with four friends to lie on the beach and think about anything but stress and consumerism.
Gili Meno is the middle Gili Island. Its known as the ‘honeymoon island’ because it is much quieter, has a more swimmer-friendly shoreline, is pricier, and is filled with couples in love. There isn’t much to see or do, but for a day of lying on the beach it is fantastic!

To get there you can get a public ferry from either of the other islands in the morning or afternoon. From Gili Air the boat leaves at 8:15 and returns from Meno at 4:00. In total the round trip will cost you 70,000 IDR or 35,000 IDR one way. At the port anyone can direct you to the public ticket office; it is at the start of the long concrete dock that extends out from the island. It definitely is not worth paying for a private boat which can be 100,000 or more as the ferry is both popular and reliable.
Be careful with the currents around the Gili Islands, when tide is low you can get dragged a little against some of the rocks hidden in the water. Swim at high tide though and you can lazily be pulled and swayed along in the beautiful, crystal clear water.
And that was boxing day! A great day on the beach

TRAVEL TIP:
1. Swim at high tide and tan at low tide to avoid a struggle with the current and rocks
2. Take the public ferry to get from island to island, don’t hire a private boat as it wont be much faster or more comfortable for the short trips (15 minutes).
