I lucked out when I moved to Makassar in terms of finding a place to live. I had anticipated settling for a khost (aka kost), a form of student or temporary housing where a family or individual rents a single room in a large house and shares a bathroom and kitchen with others. As I was planning on staying in Makassar for four months and working from home, and conditions of khosts fall across a wide spectrum, this was not ideal but thought necessary. Through a friend of a friend however, I was able to find the small self-contained cottage, as i would describe it, that I have had the pleasure of living in since September. Slightly higher on the price scale but, a real gem of a find!
My cottage consists of a large main room with a partition that can be pulled across the middle to make it into two rooms and that has been acting as my bedroom, office, and sitting room. It contains a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, small table, mini fridge and 2 chairs. In addition to the main room I also have a private bathroom (toilet and bucket shower; theres a shower head but it doesn't work) and a kitchen.
I have become comfortably accustomed to my nice little home, forgetting sometimes it may have some features others consider odd or undesirable. Only after talking to a friend back home did I realize maybe my little house is something of interest to share with others. So, here it is, a tour of my little kitchen here in Makassar!
Side note: I just had to stop typing for a moment to hunt down a large black flying insect that has been terrorizing me by chasing it around and swatting it out of the door with a sandal….just another thing I've become accustomed to.

So, here it is, my kitchen! Lets take a closer look, shall we...
On the left we have my water cooler. Essential for living in Indonesia as no one drinks the tap water. I must admit there is nothing 'cool' about this water dispenser. My 2 most essential items for survival! My pot and my gas element. This pot makes my coffee, my pasta, even my toast! Thats right folks, toast in a pot :) When you have very little you make anything work. | Next, double sinks! Lucky me, right? Well look a little closer. My slowly deteriorating gas tank makes a lovely addition to the kitchen and…knock on wood… this baby just keeps on giving! But wait! Whats that…. | Yep! There it is! Lizard poop! haha. Every morning I wake up to these little surprises littering the kitchen. Sometimes they are even on my fork… :( Yes, yes it is folks, a dead cockroach. I now must admit I spray my little home once a week. Never fail though, the morning after I do, these guys are only one type of the little surprises that crawl out of the corners to remind me why i do. |
And there you have it! My kitchen. I hope you enjoyed the tour and maybe next week we'll take a closer look at my other, at times equally questionable, room; my bathroom. Here's a sneak peak!
